Jane Sutherland was born in New York (even though she is viewed as Australian) in 1853 and passed on in 1928. She was an acclaimed scene painter and one of the principal craftsmen to advance and backer the Plein-air artistry development. At 11 years old, the Sutherland family moved to Sydney, Australia, and later on to Melbourne. Her dad was a craftsman and teacher of drawing. She initially got the hang of painting at the National Gallery School of Design under a couple of Australia’s famous specialists: Frederick McCubbin, Eugene von Guerard, and George Folingsby. At age 25, she started showing at the Victorian Academy of Arts, the Australian Artists’ Association, and the Victorian Artists’ Society.
