Unlike the traditional ideals and conventions valued during prior periods, fauvist artists were drawn to the power of the colors on the canvas. The artists associated with this movement are Albert Marquet, Andre Derain, Maurice de Vlaminck and Henri Matisse. These artists were bound by no rules, discarding all academic rules, both French and British. They painted how they wanted, using colour emotively, expressively – this was derided at their exhibition.
